Bear in mind coarser soils have a lower void ratio than finer soils. So, just because you can see the voids of a large aggregate material, does not mean the void ratio is greater than a fine grained soil. Given a void ratio of 0.3 and a specific gravity of 2.7, the dry density would be: GammaD=0.7*62.4*2.7=118 pcf.

ادامه مطلبYou asked, "Are compaction tests of #610 crushed stone reliable?". The answer is yes. If a proctor, either D698 or D1557, can be performed on the material then in-place density tests can be performed on it. so a method C (and possibly method B) of either D698 or D1557 can be performed.

Add up the volume of each layer to get the total volume of fill. Now look at your grading plan. The existing contours are the "table", of course they are never flat.

For larger sizes then you want to specify a method spec, or a target density, or be prepared to take ring tests or something like that.

Lay the geotextile fabric and place 6"-8" of crushed stone base course on top of it. It can be compacted by driving the delivery trucks or the loader over it as it is placed.
ادامه مطلبMake sure the Saran wrap is loose so that the sand conforms to the particle surfaces. If the 3/4" crushed stone has sufficient fines in it, a proctor curve can be obtained. We see it used extensively on projects. Ron is correct that nuclear density testing on clean rock is inaccurate at best.

ادامه مطلبI'd recomend a 4" layer of 1 1/2" and minus crushed rock compacted and overlaid with a 2" layer of 3/4" crushed rock. If this is properly graded, compacted, and drained, you should have a good looking lane that will perform for years and years. As far as hand work, with a good blademan in the seat there shouldn't be much if any.
